Saturday, May 30, 2015, almost a century to the day, citizens of Penticton will gather to celebrate the first official trains arriving into Penticton.

On May 31, 1915, more than half of Penticton's three thousand residents turned out to welcome the first trains into the city. Now, a century later, the Penticton Museum & Archives will host a free centennial birthday event in Gyro Park, a few steps from where those first trains arrived. Steamfest in the Park is presented by the museum, Peach City Community Radio and the Department of Canadian Heritage.

"We are inviting all of Penticton to come and celebrate on the afternoon of Saturday, May 30," says museum manager/curator Dennis Oomen. "We'll feature local entertainers such as Anne and Dave Ramey, Aiden Mayes and Mandy Cole, Sax Among Friends and the Kettle Valley Brakemen. In between, there will be storytellers, birthday cake and more surprises. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy the event."

The music and party on May 30 begins at 1 PM at the Gyro Park bandshell and the Kettle Valley Brakemen headline the show beginning at 4 PM. Peach City Community Radio will be recording a podcast of the celebration as a heritage legacy.
